The liver normally contains some fat. However, a fatty liver occurs when more than 10 percent of the liver’s weight is made up of fat. Excess fat in the liver can lead to inflammation of the liver, which is most commonly indicated through a liver blood test called ALT (alanine aminotransferase). An inflamed liver from excess fat may be related to alcohol consumption (alcoholic fatty liver disease). However, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can occur even without alcohol abuse.
Most people with a fatty liver actually have no symptoms at all. If NAFLD progresses to the point of cirrhosis (liver failure), then symptoms such as yellowing of the skin (jaundice), fatigue, abdominal pain, and unexpected weight loss may occur.
Fibroscan is the newest technology. It is to provide a non-invasive assessment of liver disease. Before this technology was available, liver biopsy was the gold standard in diagnosing NASH. Additionally, this test has many disadvantages including being invasive. Also requiring sedation with risks of pain and bleeding afterward. Now, Fibroscan can assess liver health painlessly and non-invasively in a five to ten-minute procedure.
An HbA1c test is the main blood test used to diagnose diabetes. It tests your average blood sugar levels for the last two to three months. You don’t need to prepare for a HbA1c. It’s a quick and simple test where a small amount of blood is taken from a vein in your arm. This is different to a finger-prick test, which is a snapshot of your blood sugar levels at that moment
A DEXA scan is an imaging test that measures bone density (strength). DEXA scan results can provide helpful details about your risk for osteoporosis (bone loss) and fractures (bone breaks). This test can also measure your body composition, such as body fat and muscle mass.
The physical exam is an essential part of any doctor’s visit. Surprisingly, though, there are no absolutes in a routine physical.
History. This is your chance to mention any complaints or concerns about your health. Your doctor will also likely quiz you about lifestyle behaviors.
- Blood pressure
- Heart rate
- Respiration rate:
Heart Exam. Listening to your heart with a stethoscope, a doctor might detect an irregular heartbeat, a heart murmur, or other clues to heart disease.
Lung Exam. Using a stethoscope, a doctor listens for crackles, wheezes, or decreased breath sounds. These and other sounds are clues to the presence of heart or lung disease.
Head and Neck Exam. Opening up and saying “ah” shows off your throat and tonsils. The quality of your teeth and gums also provides information about your overall health. Ears, nose, sinuses, eyes, lymph nodes, thyroid, and carotid arteries may also be examined.
Abdominal Exam. Your doctor can use a range of examination techniques including tapping your abdomen to detect liver size and presence of abdominal fluid, listening for bowel sounds with a stethoscope, and palpating for tenderness.
Neurological Exam. Nerves, muscle strength, reflexes, balance, and mental state may be assessed.
Dermatological Exam. Skin and nail findings could indicate a dermatological problem or disease somewhere else in the body.
Extremities Exam. Your doctor will look for physical and sensory changes. Pulses can be checked in your arms and legs. Examining joints can assess for abnormalities.
